Varalle

Varalle, 14, is the daughter of an Archpontifex who ruled over a portion of Cerna. She has an older brother and a younger brother and sister. She grew up in the lap of luxury in Cerrator. She had dreams of going to an Athvrean finishing school and marrying a charming merchant prince and getting to work on crafty projects for her home and family.

At 11, her father was accused of consorting with false gods and disseminating heretical literature. He was executed and most of the family's possessions were seized. Her mother had to start taking any work she could find. Unable to afford tuition, her brother left his academy and returned to work as a laborer for a shipwright. Varalle was pressured by her mother to become a servant to a wealthy family in town. This family was callous and dismissive but she stayed as the klara or two a day was vital for her mother and siblings.

While looking through the few things not confiscated, Varalle found a thin volume on Elementalism. She started to practice out of the book whenever she had time, slowly learning to conjure small flames. Her interest in elementalism grew as she encountered difficulties at her job. The lady of the house was particularly severe with her and often threatened to release her from her service. Her resentment of the family who was once beneath her had no outlet lest she endanger her family's tenuous hold on stability. She started lighting fires instead.

At first, this disturbing habit was restricted to small items in back alleys. However, it caught up with her just after her 13th birthday when someone noticed her around an abandoned building just before it went up in flames. Due to her family's previous status, their assumption that magic was not involved, and her age, the punishment was lenient. She was sentenced to 90 days of hard labor.

Varelle was taken to a lumber camp where she resided in a long barrack full of women. She was the youngest there. Most of the women were career criminals. While some antagonized her, others looked out for her. She left with a long, deep scar across her cheek from arguing with a guard. After these 90 days, her guardianship was transferred to the family she served since the clergy felt they could 'better enforce discipline'. She came back different and has never discussed the events of those 90 days with anyone.

Now not even paid for her labor and separated from her family, Varelle lives in the servants' quarters of the manor. The lady of the house has made it clear she is to be groomed into the family chambermaid and nanny. Varelle despises this woman and her children and still practices elementalism under her sheets and in the linen closet, biding her time until she can escape this life and return to her family.

She is in Elvossis with the family as they are traveling for recreation and Varelle as the live in servant can be taken where they please.

She feels her father was set up and did not commit the crimes he was killed for and wants to prove it. Her temper is simmering just below the surface. The lady of the house can see it in her eyes and has begun monitoring her more attentively.

She is a novice drawer, a hobby her mother encouraged her to take up because she saw her daughter's temper and was trying to reel her back from the edge.
