Sorry for the day late. I've been on my week vacation for the holidays and it's been . . . both fun and weird. I was looking forward to this but I've reached the point where I'm sleeping on the floor (it helps my back apparently) and my sleep schedule is drifting. I'm ok with going back to work and school. My friends tell me I'm weird because I need to be out and doing things and being productive. I don't know if I'll ever fully retire.
I beat Super Lesbian Animal RPG and here is my review:
Super Lesbian Animal RPG is an excellent JRPG with lots of silly and serious moments. Comparable to other excellent indy RPGmaker titles, the art of the game oozes adorable style. Many of the enemies are visual gags or otherwise silly, such as the enemy "most of an egg". The soundtrack is lovely with a main boss theme that I've found myself humming even when not playing. The combat mechanics center around the four characters fitting the archetypes of healer, thief, mage, and tank, each being awarded points in gauge called the star meter for doing their respective main task. The star meter is then used to execute special moves. The combat isn't especially deep but feels rewarding to engage with and the game requires no grinding. I didn't run from any fights and hit the level cap about 75% into the game (I think the cap could honestly have been higher).
The story revolves around Melody, her girlfriend, and their other two lesbian friends as they start their own adventuring guild. The story focuses on self discovery and relationships and, even if it can be a little on the nose, is one of the better ones I've seen. There's so many silly and strange moments, like a talking VHS tape or a mimic realizing you're having some emotions, feeling awkward, and leaving, that it feels like a gay Earthbound 2. There are side quests. They're not very plentiful but often reward gear that is necessary for progression outside the level system. Overall playtime is about 15-20 hours if you tackle all the side content. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in JRPGs and wanting to try their first and anyone who is a JRPG fan. While the game is great, I don't know if folks disinterested in the genre will really get much out of it. 8/10
I also beat Super Mario RPG Remake. I'd say its a fun game but it's not really for a JRPG nerd like me.
